  1. Presentation #5 (Media and Alcohol): I really enjoyed your presentation! I think having a power point presentation with several movie clips and advertisements is a fantastic idea, and will really help keep the students engaged. I think some high school students might lose focus if a teacher is using only a power point presentation, but you kept it very engaging and interesting! I also thought doing a collage/advertisement is a great and creative way to get students looking critically at different forms of media.

  2. I liked this topic because the PowerPoint presentation was very eye-catching and also because teaching students to be media literate is important because young people can be quite impressionable and it is better to look at media with a critical eye rather than to take everything the media says is true at face value. One comment I had was how receptive would parents be for the advertisements used during the lesson plan? Because grades 8-9 is still quite young to see an image of a scantily clad girl sitting in a wine glass and I was wondering how you would explain to the parents what their children will be learning about as well because alcohol is quite a touchy subject with some parents.

  3. Your group did an awesome job with your presentation as it is an important one that high school students need to be aware of. I really enjoyed the different advertisements you showed related to alcohol, including the music video and the old alcohol commercial as I remember seeing that one (forgot the brand, something Canadian??). Anyway, I thought that was really powerful to see because students, especially high school students need to see the devastating after and long term effects that alcohol will do to your system. Majority of students think that drinking is cool because the media portrays it to be. Another interesting think I liked about your presentation were the little facts and statistics you provided for us. If high school students saw these, hopefully they could separate the “myth” about alcohol and the reality. If we had the chance to do the class activity, I thought it would be a good one to do because students would have the chance to express themselves about how they portray alcohol and the media. Overall, great job presenting as I found this to be a very interesting topic.

  4. I thought your presentation covered a really important and relevant topic for students. The advertizing activity was a great idea. One cautionary thought would be to make sure that the ads are presented in a way that does not glorify their message (you didn't present it this way. I am just saying this as a general comment). I think you picked a good age group to start discussing alcohol.

One other note, is that I think it is important to talk about respecting other people's decision to NOT drink. Just one aspect that could have been incorporated.

  5. I liked your topic choice of alcohol risks and teens. It seems binge drinking is becoming more and more popular for youth. The coloured handout was a great visual resource. I think your target audience (Grade 8/9) was a great choice.

One of the messages I took from the activity was to be responsible when drinking. I wonder how parents would react to teachers discussing any level of “safe drinking”. Abstinence is not always effective, but I think some parents may be against discussing any level of drinking as acceptable.

  6. I thought this was a fun and engaging lesson. It's good that you targeted kids in grade 8 and 9, since this seems to be the age when a lot of kids start drinking.
I like that you got the kids to think critically about who is telling them what to drink (the media).
I think Alicia raises a good point with parents' reception. Perhaps there should have been more of an emphasis on abstinence.

Last thing: I liked that you included reasons why NOT to drink too young, like risk of increased estrogen levels. It illustrates that there are real repercussions if kids start to drink at too young of an age.

  7. As Erin just said about the physical implications of drinking- I think I learned something here. This was definitely not discussed when I was in high school. Drinking was not really discussed other then the advice of not to do and what could happen if you do ie make bad decisions. I too liked how you were not just lecturing kids but asking them to think critically about drinking and engaging them in discussions about how society (media) portrays drinking. I think this is a really hard subject to talk about in schools because often as educators we are hypocritical with the message. We are telling them not to drink but we drink so how can we justify that and I am not sure that we can- so approaching it from the angle of thinking about the whys of drinking and the affects of media on the reasoning behind the why is a good approach
    thanks

  8. Alcohol abuse amongst teenagers, especially at a young age, is slowly becoming very common today. I like how you targeted your presentation towards high school students of grade 8 and 9. Not only did you stress the risk factors concerned with alcohol abuse, but you did it in such a way that kept the class engaged. Your power point presentation was very informative. I felt like the music video was a great way to start your lesson plan because students were able to familiarize themselves with the music and actually comprehend what it was really about. High school students today are exposed to the media and consume alcohol because it is advertised in such a way that it has been deemed to be the socially acceptable thing to do. It is important to educate teenagers on the long term affects of consuming alcohol at such a young age because students at this age are much more prone to cave under peer pressure. I think that if they are aware of the detrimental effects of alcohol consumption at such a young age, they would reconsider abusing it. I think the activity that you’d had planned would have been a great way to understand the role that media plays when it comes to alcohol consumption. Great job, Group 5!
