Our thanks to the group who led us in some relaxation methods. Today in class we covered some teaching techniques and looked at how to develop a lesson plan. We had a chance to practice creating a lesson with Highlights magazines. We also formed our groups for the Lesson Presentations and signed up for our dates.
**Reminder: the Research paper is due next week, Nov. 7. Please e-mail your paper before class. Also for next time, please bring in some old magazines for an activity.
For the blog this week, write the next installment of your Personal Health narrative. Tell us how it's going and what progress or obstacles you've encountered.
See you next week.

My personal health goal has been to go to the gym more. I think I am getting better at going to the gym but I still tend to make excuses like "I have an exam today, I'd rather study before the exam than go to the gym" and other such excuses because I don't like getting to school earlier and going to the gym. But whenever I do go to the gym, afterwards I always feel more energized and happier so its funny but its kind of a battle between my laziness and my health. Hopefully I can try to get myself to go the gym more because we are going on a cruise for winter break and I want to look good lol
ReplyDeleteMy junk food reduction program appears to be working. I consistently cutting one day of junk food and replacing it with healthy food. I admit I fly off the handle at times (especially during the exam period) but that's only happened once 2 weeks ago. Otherwise I am keeping the one day that is junk food free! I don't miss it and am ready to add a second day.
ReplyDeleteAs for our group project we have decided to work on physical education with basket ball as an example. We are focusing on teaching self-esteem and team work as well as the importance of exercise. I am excited to begin this project as I am a firm believer that physical education (or at least emphasis on a life time of fitness)is necessary for a healthy population.
My personal health goal was to eat healthier by making better choices for each meal, trying to not eat at funny hours and eliminating fast food. It has been a rough go since I made the plan. I am trying to eat healthier, but have been finding it tough to do because of my lack of motivation and how busy my schedule has gotten over the past month. Obviously, everyone is busy in life yet many still find the time to eat healthy. That being said, I am having no problem drinking an extra glass of water or milk per day, or grabbing an extra piece of fruit for my lunch. My struggles are eating a healthy, balanced breakfast as well as snacking after dinner, or after work, late at night. Furthermore, because my work shifts are majority scheduled during the night, I am still having a tough time eating dinner at “normal hours.” I am happy to report that I have cut down immensely on the amount of fast food I have eaten in the past month. The amount of McDonalds and Subway visits after work shifts have decreased to almost none. Though, I will admit that my Tim Horton’s coffee addiction is still going strong. I generally only add milk to my coffee, so I do not feel guilty for drinking coffee; but, I am definitely guilty of purchasing a Boston Cream donut every now and then.
ReplyDeleteThis past weekend I travelled to Montreal and Pittsburgh to watch two of my favourite sports teams, the Montreal Canadiens and the Pittsburgh Steelers, play in their respective cities. Due to the lack of kitchen units in hotels and nearby grocery stores, I had few choices but to eat out at restaurants for most meals. Furthermore, the food and beverages at NHL and NFL games are not exactly low calorie, non-fat, health conscious choices nor are they easy to say no to (how could I NOT have a beer at an NFL game!?). However, this trip was helpful in fulfilling my goal of eating breakfast every morning, as both hotels I stayed in had complimentary breakfasts! Thanks to that daily routine, this week I plan to get back on track with my health plan, specifically trying to eat breakfast at home every morning.
As for my health goals, I managed to stick to my schedule of going to the gym three times a week and eating healthy. I was successfully able to follow through with my goals till midterms started however near the end of the month of October, I realized that school was slowly starting to take over much of my time during the day. With much disappointment, I have to say I have not been able to follow through with my plans these past two weeks. With the stress of staying on top of school work, I began getting chocolate cravings especially when all my classes started handing out candy around the week of Halloween. As much as I was happy with myself for making progress over the 2 months I did not do a very good job this past week. I had noticed a change in my energy. I was a much positive person with much energy to give out during the day. Going up the set of stairs to our class was not so difficult anymore. I know it is probably all just excuses but I do plan following through with my goals again by the end of this week.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, as I was studying this weekend up at SFU I picked up the SFU newsletter. The front page had 2 articles that I thought would fit great with this class. The first post was a focus on the food up at Burnaby campus. As the contract with Chartwells expires in 2012, the school is aiming to improve the quality of campus life. Over the next month or so the board will be trying to ask around as many people as possible for their opinions. This will hopefully make an impact and improve the food services at SFU.
What do you really think of the food up at Burnaby Campus?
Hello EDUC 371 classmates.
ReplyDeleteAs stated before, my health goal for the semester has been in decline for a while now. It is sad to say that progress has stopped dead in its tracks. The original goal/plan for me was to run at least 4 times a week for 30 minutes however, I have not run since early October. For this one, there are really no obstacles that are in the way of the health goal that I wanted to accomplish. One could say school assignments and the late practices may be in the way but these are not the factors. The real obstacle in the way is my laziness to get back in shape. It’s like every time I feel like going for a run, my body just says “no way, too tired”. However, I am going to have to learn to push out that system and get back in shape. I am doing all the small things right like eating a balanced diet and getting enough sleep but the large component missing is cardiovascular activity. With all my family’s health problems staring me in the face, I basically have the choice and ability to do something about it before it gets too late. We are entering November and the weather is still nice outside, call it whatever you want but I think it is a sign saying that “I still have time to turn this thing around and get back in shape!” So hopefully once the last rush of papers and assignments are finished, I can get back on track and focusing on staying healthy and alive for a long time.
My personal health goal initially was to get back into shape to be fit enough to join a soccer team and play again. I started going to the gym but felt like I wasn’t consistent enough so I decided to join a team. This way, I can’t make excuses as to why I cannot attend practice. My coach is extremely hard on us and always asks for a valid reason if we’re unable to make it to a practice or game. He says that school is not an excuse because we all know what our schedules look like and if we cannot manage playing soccer and going to school at the same time, we shouldn’t have joined in the first place. As a team, we condition on Tuesdays and focus on drills, techniques and scrimmaging on Thursdays. Games are on Sundays so we have a two day break in between. Although I work four days a week as well and go to school five days a week, I try my hardest not to miss a practice. It’s a way for me to forget about all the stress and just get out there and have fun. With Christmas coming up and the weather getting colder and colder, I knew I wouldn’t make it to the gym and go for runs had I not joined the team. This is the main reason I decided to join. Although I haven’t played in over a year, it feels great to get back into it.
