After Class Six

Many thanks to our warm up group who led us through some focus steps.  This week we looked at some films about body image and advertising and how this influences youth.  We also shared some journal articles on different health-related topics.  Please bring these articles back to the next class and we will continue the group presentations and discussions.
For next week's blog I will ask you to report in on your personal health goals and let us know how it's going.
Keep working on your research papers (due date Nov. 7).  Enjoy the beautiful autumn colours!

  1. This lecture we watched a film called "Killing Us Softly 3" which is the third in a series of documentary's based on body image and the media. I thought that this was an eye-opening video and one of the most important messages I took away from the video was that advertising doesn't only sell products, it sells values, images, concepts of love/sexuality/romance/success and concepts of normalcy which can have a significant impact on the lives of adolescents watching this media.

I really enjoyed the video we watched in last week’s class; many important messages were discussed in this eye opening video. Body image and the media have major affects on females, and now are slowly beginning to affect males. It is so important both males and females realize that the images they see in the media are not realistic and represent a minority of the population. Thus parents and educators must take the time to help adolescents appreciate and respect their bodies.
In regards to the progress of my health goal, I have completed my two week cleanse with great success! Some major changes to my diet that I focused on were eliminating wheat and dairy as much as possible. This was huge for me as I love yogurt, pasta, bread, milk and cereal! I found ways to substitute some of these items by buying gluten free products such as gluten free waffles, rice pasta, and gluten free slice bread. I ate tons of fruit and vegetables throughout the process and cut out my intake of sweets. I obviously had a day or two where I had no choice but to eat some wheat products (as gluten free foods are extremely expensive); however more often than not I stuck to the plan. Throughout the two weeks I also did not have any alcoholic beverages.
After completing the cleanse I didn’t notice too many changes in regards to my body. I already eat pretty healthy and I don’t feel I have much weight to lose; thus the changes I noticed were quite minor. First, I did maybe lose a pound or two over the course of the cleanse although my weight can fluctuate between 3-5 lbs quite often. I did notice I experiences less bloating throughout the process and after the cleanse was complete. Overall I think the effects the cleanse had on me most was mentally, changing my diet and sticking to my goal was a fulfilling experience in its own. I am planning on sticking to healthy eating habits by cutting back on wheat products (though not completely as it is too expensive to buy alternatives at times), and continuing to eat plenty of fruits and veggies. I am also trying not to eat after 8pm, and if I do I have been sticking to apples!

  4. Outside of our classroom doors, we all live busy lives and as mentioned in our warm up activity there are many focus step activities that we can do to help us prepare for the task of the time. Whether you need to settle your class down as a teacher, or simply just calm yourself down before an activity, certain games and activities can be done. There are many movies out there about body images and advertising and the effects it has on youth. I posted a link on a documentary video called Miss. Representation a few weeks ago but for those of you who haven’t seen it yet, here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gkIiV6konY. It was similar to the video we watched in class last week discussing the impact media and body image has on not only females but males as well.

As for my health goals, I managed to stick to my schedule of going to the gym three times a week and eating healthy. I was successfully able to follow through with my goals till midterms started however near the end of the month of October, I realized that school was slowly starting to take over much of my time during the day. With much disappointment, I have to say I have not been able to follow through with my plans these past two weeks. With the stress of staying on top of school work, I started getting chocolate cravings especially when all my classes started handing out candy around the week of Halloween. As much as I was happy with myself for making progress over the 2 months I did not do a very good job this past week. I had noticed a change in my energy. I was a much positive person with much energy to give out during the day. Going up the set of stairs to our class was not so difficult anymore.

Overall, due to the changes I saw in myself I will not let this past week become a habit. I will balance my time with school and staying healthy. I do plan on continuing to eat a much more balanced diet as well as eating on time. Whether that means trying to eating breakfast and or moving away from consuming mid night snacks. I plan on continuing to drink lots of water and munching on fruits and vegetables rather than chips and chocolate.

  5. I found the movie (slowly killing us) to be a moving piece. I had always known that women are objectified but I never really put so much thought into it. The ads they showed were not at all shocking to me as I have been brought up with kind of thing (much like many women). I am certain that this as effected how I view woman's issue, sometimes very serious issue circulating woman's rights seem common place and can be brushed aside. When we think about it though much of how we are portrayed is demeaning and can have harm on girls growing up. They may come to believe they are only good for "X" or they should act like "Y" or they should stay in their place. I think that the video is correct, because we are so desensitized to objectification of women both men and women turn a blind eye to very serious social justice issues surrounding women and their rights.

  6. This week we watched Killing Us Softly. Though I have seen the video a couple times before, this video always has a profound impact on the classes I am in, in terms of body image and gender issues. It is incredible to see that when the advertisements and slogans we see every day on television and in magazines are portrayed in a different way, they suddenly become incredibly negative images and actually appear to send subliminal messages to adolescents. However, I am not sure that these images will completely disappear from the advertisements we see every. Though they may be sending negative messages, they apparently work as various product advertisements are incredibly successful in influencing the public to buy their products.

  7. This week, we watched Killing Us Softly with Jean Kilbourne. I was extremely surprised at the fact that we are exposed to thousands of advertisements every single day as well as the different methods organizations use to market their products. Women are used as distorted and destructive objects and femininity is stereotyped. Images and messages in advertisements reflect how women should look in terms of appearance, sexuality, etc. I found it very degrading how women are objectified and scrutinized in advertisements for the sole purpose of attracting consumers and eventually generating revenues. Real women see these advertisements and lose their self esteem. These market schemes could result in eating disorders, violence against women, etc. Jean Kilbourne illustrates the idea that materialistic things are centered in society and the idea that women should dress, act, speak and look a certain way has become inescapable.

As for my health goal, I have taken up playing soccer on a community team. My team practices twice a week and plays games on Sunday mornings. Because I’m busier than ever with work and schoolwork to focus on, time management is extremely important. This means that I need to get an adequate amount of sleep every night to have energy the next day to work, study and practice. It feels great to be back on the field because it has been quite a while since I have played.
