Hard to believe next week is our last class. I've really enjoyed meeting all of you and found our discussions lively, informative and a lot of fun. I wish you all the best of luck.
For next class, we will take a look at an article that will help us do a review of the semester. I'll also pass out self-evaluations connected to class participation. We probably won't go the full time.
On this prompt, please give Group Seven your feedback on their presentation.

Many thanks to our warm up group today who led us through some stretching exercises. We also had three more Lesson Presentations today. Please post feedback on this prompt for Group Four (Social Determinants of Health - Katherine, Alicia & Erin), and scroll down to see where to post feedback for the other two groups.
A reminder that the blogs/reading logs are due next week. You should have 9 entries after the introductory posting. Please e-mail me your total blog/log in one Word document. Besides your feedback for the groups, please share some of your thoughts on how your Personal Health Plan went this semester; i.e., your successes, any challenges, and how you might implement this activity in an educational setting.

After Class Nine - Group 1
Thanks again to our warm up group and their stretching exercises. Today we started our Lesson Presentations. Thanks to everyone who presented today for getting us off to a good start.
Please post your feedback on this and the two prompts below, one for each group. You can comment on their ideas, activities and rationales as well as ask questions and offer suggestions. For the presenters, you can respond to feedback in your reflections which will be due the week after the presentations. Please comment on all the groups except your own. We will do the same thing for every group over the next three weeks.
We also had a look at two articles on the ideas of Ivan Illich and Medical Nemesis. I've found a great website that hosts educational documentaries, and if you would still like to see Food Matters, it is under "Health" at Top Documentaries This site is an amazing resource for educators!
Have a great week.

After Class Eight
Thanks once again to our group who led us through the warm up. (I'll have to work on those push-ups a bit longer.) Today we looked at two lessons related to teaching health issues, "Empowered Decision-Making" and "Helping Students Process Stress Through Writing to Literary Characters". We had some fun making collages that represented health topics.
Our group presentations begin next week. Also, a reminder that the blogs/reading logs will be due before class on Nov. 28. Please e-mail me all the postings in one Word document. (After the introductory blog, you should have 9 entries.)
Enjoy the long weekend.

Our thanks to the group who led us in some relaxation methods. Today in class we covered some teaching techniques and looked at how to develop a lesson plan. We had a chance to practice creating a lesson with Highlights magazines. We also formed our groups for the Lesson Presentations and signed up for our dates.
**Reminder: the Research paper is due next week, Nov. 7. Please e-mail your paper before class. Also for next time, please bring in some old magazines for an activity.
For the blog this week, write the next installment of your Personal Health narrative. Tell us how it's going and what progress or obstacles you've encountered.
See you next week.

After Class Six
Many thanks to our warm up group who led us through some focus steps. This week we looked at some films about body image and advertising and how this influences youth. We also shared some journal articles on different health-related topics. Please bring these articles back to the next class and we will continue the group presentations and discussions.
For next week's blog I will ask you to report in on your personal health goals and let us know how it's going.
Keep working on your research papers (due date Nov. 7). Enjoy the beautiful autumn colours!

After Class Five
This week we finished off our discussions on newspaper articles related to our chapters' topics. We also looked at how to read nutrition labels, iron and the vegetarian diet, the cost of junk food related to feeding a family of four, and organic food. We watched the 2009 film, Good Food which focused on organic farming. Lastly, we got back in our food groups and compiled a chart on the benefits, disadvantages, calories and consumer awareness of each group.
For this blog posting, please create three meal plans, each centered around your food group, that reflect a balance diet. If you haven't already, please send me your outline for the research paper. Enjoy the beautiful autumn weather!

After Class Four
Many thanks to our group who led the weight-training warm up (although I admit to being a little sore after those lunges...) This week we covered mental-emotional health and family-social health. We watched a video, Understanding Teen Depression (2010). We also got into groups and discussed our health news articles. At the end of class I assigned food groups; please do some informal research on the following: the benefits of the food, the negative side (if any) and what we need to know as consumers (carbon footprint if coming from long distances, pesticide sprays, cost, etc.). In the next class you will have time to get into your group and compare findings.
*** Please note: there is no class next Monday for Thanksgiving. You only need to post here one time before the Oct. 17 class. In the meantime, please think about a topic for your research paper. When you are ready, send me your outline and then you can go ahead and start your research. I will be sending out a list of topics via class e-mail if you are not sure what you want to write about. Any of the topics shared in class from the news articles would be acceptable.
If you are interested in the war between healthy nutrition and the pharmaceutical companies, this informative documentary from Food Matters is free until Oct. 8: http://www.foodmatters.tv/screeningeventcinema
Enjoy the turkey!

After Class Three
Many thanks to our first group for leading us in some yoga exercises! In this class we discussed the objectives in teaching School Health Education and looked at B.C.'s IRP's for CAPP and Planning. We looked at some findings about substituting soybean-based meals in school lunches in "Soy Goes to School: Acceptance of Healthful, Vegetarian Options in Maryland Middle Schools" (April 2010) in the Journal of School Health. Lastly we discussed the conventions of writing narrative and started writing about our personal health plan for the semester. On this prompt, you can share your narrative, or just a part of it, or, you can choose to include it in your reading log (private entry).
For next week, please bring a news article with recent information on a health topic related to Chapters 5, 6 & 7 in our textbook (for example: values, character, esteem, behaviour, mind, emotion, stress, healthy family relations, friends, dating, sex, marriage, planned parenthood, birth control, body health, female/male health, pregnancy/childbirth, care for infants/children, learning style, maturity, aging and death). I will be showing a DVD about depression and suicide, so to avoid redundancy, avoid those topics. (Reading for next week is just Chapters 5 & 6).

After Class Two
I think we got off to a good start today and had some interesting discussions. In the lecture we looked at some statistics on high risk behaviour and examined the components of comprehensive school health. We started class with a warm up activity and I'm looking forward to learning other ways to warm up, stretch, meditate and be active. We examined the article, "Economic rationalism, healthism and school health education". Lastly, we started thinking about our personal health goals for the semester which we will be writing narratives on later.
For this week's blog posting, please choose two ideas to write about, or one idea in more depth. Feel free to share any personal experiences but remember not to give real names of people or places (i.e., schools).
PLEASE NOTE: We will be in a new classroom next Monday, Sept. 26 -- Blusson 11901 (go all the way down to the bus loop and then take the stairs -- its the third room on that hall). E-mail reminder to follow.
Enjoy the sun while you can! See you next week.
